What are Google Wizard routines and how to set them up

Google Assistant routines are a set of automated actions that Google Assistant will perform whenever you say a specific phrase.

You can start using this feature now with very little effort using one of the six Google Wizard routines already in place. But if you want to be creative, you can set up custom Google Assistant routines that do a series of actions that the Google Assistant can do.

In this article, we’ll explore the six routines you’ve already prepared, and then show you how to set up your own custom Google Assistant routines to automate your day.

How to access Google Assistant routines

  • Accessing Google Assistant routines is easy. Simply open the Google Assistant app on your phone and tap the compass icon at the bottom right of the screen.
  • In the Browse window, tap your profile picture in the upper right, and select Configuration from the drop-down menu.
  • On the Settings screen, tap the button Assistant and select Routines.
  • On the Google Wizard Routines screen, you’ll see all the ready-made routines that you can start using right away.

Google Assistant routines ready

The six Google Wizard routines already prepared include actions that occur when you say specific statements aloud.

  • Good morning: Say “Good morning,” “Tell me my day,” or “I’m up.”
  • Bedtime: Say “Bedtime,” “Good Night,” or “It’s Time to Touch the Hay.”
  • Leaving home: Just say “I’m leaving” or “I’m leaving”.
  • I’m at home: Say “I’m home” or “I’m back.”
  • Travel to work: Say “Let’s go to work”.
  • Trips home: Say “Let’s go home.”

Although these are prefabricated routines, you can customize them as you wish. Let’s take a closer look at how each of these prefabricated Google Assistant routines is set up.

Good morning routine

In the ready-made routines menu, tap the button Good morning routine to see how it is set up.

When this routine is activated, the following actions take place automatically:

  1. Silent mode is off
  2. You will hear the weather forecast for the day
  3. You will feel the traffic between home and work
  4. You will hear news from your registered news sources

As you can see in the list of actions, you can activate many more actions that you want for your morning routine.

  • Adjust smart lights, smart plugs, or other smart devices in your home.
  • Adjust the smart thermostat
  • Create a “scene” with smart light bulbs
  • Listen to your day’s calendar from the Google calendar
  • Listen to any reminders you have asked the Google Assistant to remember
  • Adjust the volume of the media

You can also add any custom action from all the commands available with the Google Wizard.

Once all the actions are complete, you can also set up this routine to play music, news, a radio station, podcasts, an audiobook, or anything.

Bedtime routine

In the ready-made routines menu, tap the button Bedtime routine to see how it is set up.

When this routine is activated, the following actions take place automatically:

  1. Silent mode is enabled
  2. You will hear the weather forecast for tomorrow
  3. You will be asked to set an alarm for the next day

You can also enable additional actions.

  • Listen to your first event on the calendar the next morning
  • Adjust smart home appliances
  • Adjust the smart thermostat
  • Create a “scene” with smart light bulbs
  • Activate your security system and activate all the smart locks you have
  • Adjust the media volume of your phone

As with other routines, you can also add any other action you want. Once all the actions are complete, you can set up this routine to play music, sleep sounds, or nothing.

Go out or get home routines

In the ready-made routines menu, tap the button Leaving home routine to see how it is set up.

By default, there is no action enabled for the home exit routine. However, all of the following actions are available:

  • Adjust smart devices
  • Adjust the smart thermostat
  • Adjust smart light bulb themes
  • Assemble the security system
  • Lock smart locks

Add any other action you want. There are no preset media options either, but you can select it Add multimedia content to enable any of the multimedia options you like.

He I’m at home The routine only has the action of playing music when you tell the Google Assistant that you’re home. However, you can also add any of the same actions available to the Leaving home routine, as well as some extras:

  • Transmits “I’m at home” to all Google Home speakers in the house
  • Listen to the reminders you asked for in the Google Assistant when you got home

You can also play any type of media source you want.

Travel route to work

In the ready-made routines menu, tap the button Travel to work routine.

This routine has all of the following actions enabled by default:

  1. Find out the traffic conditions from home to your work location
  2. Listen to the weather forecast for the day
  3. Automatically adjust the media volume of your phone.
  4. Play music

In addition to these actions, you can also enable any of the following actions:

  • Listen to your Google Calendar calendar for the day
  • Listen to the reminders of the day
  • Adjust smart devices in your home
  • Adjust the thermostat
  • Adjust the smart light bulb scenes
  • Sets the volume of media content in your phone

Music playback is set by default, but you can change this option to play any of the media options you want to listen to during your commute.

Home travel routine

In the ready-made routines menu, tap the button Trips home routine.

This routine has all of the following actions enabled by default:

  1. Find out the traffic conditions from your work location to your home
  2. Send custom text to anyone you want
  3. Automatically adjust the media volume of your phone
  4. Play music

In addition to these actions, you can also enable any of the following actions:

  • Listen to unread texts you missed while at work
  • Stream “I’m back home” to all Google Home speakers in your home
  • Adjust smart devices in your home
  • Adjust the thermostat
  • Adjust the smart light bulb scenes
  • Sets the volume of media content in your phone

Music playback is set by default, but you can change it to play any of the media options you want to listen to when you travel home.

Creating custom Google Wizard routines

You can create unlimited Google Wizard routines for any possibility. To do this, go back to the main Routines window, just select Add a routine to start your new custom routine.

Your custom routine has three parts that you can set up.

  • Set the trigger to be specific passwords or have the routine trigger on a specific day and time.
  • Add any actions that you want to occur when you say the passwords.
  • Add the media you want to play when you say the command words.

When you select Add an action, you can add any action that is compatible with the long list of Google Assistant Passwords.

If you don’t know many Google Wizard commands, you can select them Browse popular actions tab to choose from usual commands. You’ll find three very useful action pages that you can add to any of your custom Google Wizard routines.

When you select Add media, you can select music, news, radio stations, podcasts, audiobooks, or audio sounds.

Most of these will require you to configure your preferred media sources from third-party sources that are supported by the Google Wizard.

If you choose sleep sounds, there is a list of nine preconfigured sounds available, from rain and ocean to forest sounds or just white noise.

By combining any voice command with all of these actions and supports, you can schedule Google Assistant routines that do virtually anything for you, at any time of the day.
