There is a known issue in some Lenovo laptops where the webcam does not work. Windows does not detect the webcam itself or there is an apparent problem with the device driver. It’s an annoying problem that seems very common with Lenovo cameras, but it could happen to any laptop.
While I show you how to fix the Lenovo webcam problem, this same handy article may be useful for you to solve similar problems with other webcam brands.
The cause of this problem apparently comes from a problem with a configuration on some Lenovo laptops that disables the camera for the privacy of the laptop user.
While it’s a commendable goal for Lenovo to take this extra step to protect users ’privacy from their laptop, a side effect is that it can make the camera a little harder to get to work properly.
If you’re lucky, that’s all that’s wrong with your camera. In this case, fixing your webcam should be fairly easy to do. If you’re not so lucky, you may need to update or adjust for your webcam to work.
However, don’t worry. I’ll show you what you need to do to fix some common issues you may encounter with your Lenovo webcam.
Lenovo’s webcam doesn’t work: how to fix it
When you make it work, Lenovo’s webcam is really very good. The color and details are solid, the responsiveness is excellent and will work in most light conditions.
I have a Lenovo Ideapad and I think it is a great device and I use it all the time.
The first solution to the Lenovo webcam not working is within the Lenovo app. Press the F8 key on the laptop keyboard. This is the key to turn Lenovo EasyCamera on or off.
If that doesn’t work, try following these steps to fix your webcam:
- Type ‘lenovo’ in the Windows search box and select Lenovo settings .
- Select Chamber and scroll to Privacy mode .
- activate the disable the privacy mode .
- Please try your camera again.
This privacy setting is designed for your protection. It is relatively easy to hack someone’s webcam if they can access your computer, and there have been many incidents of this.
When your camera is compromised, hackers can use the camera to spy or even use the camera to cause other types of problems, such as enlisting in a DDoS attack.
While it wasn’t Lenovo cameras that were involved, the 2021 Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack that nearly brought down the Internet was caused by a malware program that essentially enlisted an army of cameras. zombies that sent data to targets at the same time.
The point I’m referring to here is that cameras are a popular target for hackers for all sorts of nefarious reasons.
Presumably, Lenovo thought that setting high privacy would prevent this from happening to it. While it’s a great privacy feature, it’s a shame you turn off the camera for everything!
If that doesn’t work, try some of these generic solutions. They will work on any Windows computer that has problems with your webcam, not just Lenovos.
Check with Device Manager
Is the webcam supported by Device Manager?
There is only one way to find out. Follow these steps to verify:
- Right-click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager .
- Select Imaging devices and after Lenovo EasyCamera . If there is a yellow warning triangle next to the icon, there is a problem with it. If a small down arrow appears, the camera has been disabled.
- Right-click on Lenovo EasyCamera and make sure there is no option to Enable. If the camera is already enabled, the option should be Off.
If the camera is already enabled, you can also update the driver. Follow these steps to do this:
- Right click on Lenovo EasyCamera again and select update driver .
- Select the option automatic to see if Windows can find a new driver.
- Allow it to install and try again.
If Windows cannot find the driver, visit this page on the Lenovo site for the latest Lenovo EasyCamera driver .
If a driver update does not work, it may be worth trying a full update. This means uninstalling the driver, restarting the laptop, and installing the new driver from the link above.
Inherited configuration may remain in play even when a newer driver overwrites it. I suggest this a lot with the bad behavior of the hardware on Windows computers.
Watch the program
If your webcam works in some programs and not in others, it may be the program settings and not the camera settings that are causing the problem.
Just follow these two steps to verify:
- Open the program in question and look for the menu option configuration .
- Make sure Lenovo EasyCamera is configured to be the camera defects in this configuration.
I know it sounds incredibly obvious, but the number of times I’ve been to a client’s computer alone so that the default device isn’t selected makes it worth mentioning here.
Remove the Lenovo Settings app
If none of these solutions work, you can remove the Lenovo Settings app completely in case it interferes. This shouldn’t be necessary, but if nothing else works, you have nothing to lose.
Most of the settings within the app are controllable from Windows anyway, so it is not damaging the laptop in any way.
To remove the Lenovo Settings app, follow these four steps:
- Navigate to Control panel in Windows.
- Select Programs and features i Uninstall .
- Select Lenovo configuration dependency package from the list and select Uninstall .
- Restart the laptop and try again.
If your Lenovo EasyCamera still doesn’t work after all these steps, I suggest you make a support call with technical support.
If replacing the driver, enabling the camera and removing the Lenovo app doesn’t fix it, there’s something really wrong, so don’t waste your time!
