How to use Google Docs resume templates

When it comes to writing a resume, some people will end up spending hundreds of dollars to eliminate it. A well-written resume is a key ingredient to successful job search, and learning how to create one can be intimidating.

Even if you decide to manage it on your own, many of the recommended resumes and websites for writing resumes are not freely available. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t escape a quality resume without paying. Using a Google Docs resume template is one of the best ways to achieve this.

Fortunately, Google has recognized the popularity of Docs as a resume creation tool and offers a gallery of templates to help you get started.

How to find Google Docs resume templates

When navigating to Google Docs, you will see a row at the top of the page with options for creating a new document. You may see one or two resume templates in this row, but there are others to check if you click Template gallery link at the top right.

Clicking on it will expand the template gallery and display a total of five different resume templates: Swiss, Serif, Coral, Spearmint and Modern Writer.

Clicking one will take you directly to a new document where you can start editing the template.

How to edit a Google Docs resume template

Once you’ve selected a resume template that you want, you can start editing it. Let’s look at the Serif template as an example.

Serif is a sensitive two-column template. While you can add or remove sections depending on how the page content is populated, it’s important not to stack either column with significantly longer text than the other.

If you do, in the end it will be a bad sight. Therefore, a single-column resume template (such as Coral or Modern Writer) may be preferred.

If you see that your first template option does not meet your needs, you can always try the others. Sections can be easily renamed and recolored simply by highlighting and changing the font, color, and other attributes of the text. Don’t be afraid to experiment, as you can easily undo any changes or reload the template from scratch.

An important tip to remember is that you must adhere to the predefined format style for the outline to work properly.

If you highlight a small section of text in the resume template, you’ll notice that pretty much anything that isn’t “lorem ipsum” text is a heading. While you can only format normal text to look identical to the header text, setting them as a header is what Google Docs tells you where to place them in the outline.

While it’s not uncommon for companies and employers to request your resume as a Google Docs link, compliance with the formatting rules can translate to the best possible export in all file formats. Some text editors support schemas.

How to save Google Docs resume templates

As mentioned, you won’t find many employers asking you to submit a resume in the form of a Google Docs link. That’s why you’ll want to understand how to properly export your resume as one of the most common text-based file formats.

Luckily, Google makes this process extremely simple and only takes a few clicks. All you have to do is click on File , hover over download to expand the options and click on any of the file formats you want to download the resume.

Based on my experiences with job search, most companies and employers will apply for your resume in PDF document format. However, it doesn’t hurt to keep a copy of your resume with Microsoft Word, Rich Text Format, and Plain Text. If you download them now, you can save time in the future.

You should also check each of the downloaded files using a compatible application, such as Foxit PDF Reader, Notepad ++, and more.

If you update your resume frequently, you should remember to re-download your resume in each of these formats. Don’t pass up and send an outdated resume copy just because someone is requesting it in a format you don’t usually use.

That’s all it takes to create and save a resume using Google Docs by selecting resume templates. While there are payment alternatives that can make the process faster and easier, Google Docs resume templates are one of the best and most flexible free options.
