How To Fix Discord RTC Connection Error

Discord has quickly become the gold standard for creating gaming and amateur communities since it was first launched in 2015. It has a number of useful features that allow its users to stay in touch. remotely with friends and strangers with similar ideas, with screen and voice sharing or free video communication.

Unfortunately, some Discord users trying to make a voice call will see a “RTC connection” error appear that seems to prevent the call from connecting. A “Discord RTC” Discord error can be caused by several issues, but it can be fixed. If you want to correct this error in Discord, this is what you need to do.

What is a “RTC Connecting” discord error and what causes it?

If you see “RTC Connection” in Discord, it usually means that there is a problem preventing the WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) protocol from creating a connection between you and the Discord servers to allow voice chat to take place.

Other issues, such as the common “no route” error, are related to this same issue, as Discord cannot establish a connection between the computer and its servers. Without a stable Discord connection to your PC, any attempt to establish a connection for voice or video communication will fail.

While the problem can sometimes be a discord outage, most users will find that a Discord “RTC connection” error points to a local network problem. First, restarting the PC is usually a good first step, as this will force the PC to reconnect to the local network.

All things blocked network ports to a corrupt DNS cache can cause Discord voice communication to fail, however. If restarting your computer does not work and you are sure that your internet connection is stable, you may need to try the following steps to get your Discord voice communication working again.

Check the status of the Discord service

Before checking any other settings, you should confirm that the problem is your problem. Discord interruptions, while uncommon, occur from time to time, preventing users from using the platform. It may be a smaller interruption that prevents voice and video communication, or it may prevent you from connecting to the service completely.

  1. To check the status of the Discord service and rule out interruptions, go to Discord Status website. Make sure the file API section appears as Operational (shown in green). Partial interruptions will appear in orange, while full interruptions will appear in red.
  1. On the same page, scroll down and open the file Voice category. This will open a list of server regions. Make sure your region appears as Operational. If not, you may be able to temporarily switch to another region to avoid it by following the steps below.

If Discord has problems, stay away for an hour or two. The problem should be resolved when you return to most cases.

Disconnect from open VPNs and network ports

If you use a virtual private network (VPN) on your PC, this may block your connection to the Discord server, causing an “RTC connection” error in the process. Similarly, if you use a network firewall (or Windows firewall), closed ports can prevent Discord from working properly.

Discord uses a random UDP port between 50,000 and 65,535 to establish voice communications. However, your PC or Mac will usually allow access to this random port automatically. This is one of the advantages of the WebRTC protocol. If it does not, you may need to configure the router to allow this.

While it’s not recommended to simply open a huge port range like this, you may be able to do so use port forwarding on your router to direct this traffic to a single port or range of ports, which you can control (and limit) inbound traffic to Discord only.

However, if you use a VPN and traffic is blocked, you may need to disconnect and use Discord without it. Alternatively, you can whitelist certain ports if the service allows it, but you should consult your VPN service to confirm that this is possible.

Change the discord server, audio subsystem, and quality of service (QoS) region settings

Discord has a number of parameters that can affect voice communication. For example, Discord servers are grouped into server regions, so latency between users and Discord servers is minimal. However, if your region is having problems, you can temporarily switch to another region to fix it.

You can also change your Discord quality of service (QoS) and audio subsystem settings. This will probably reduce the overall quality, but it should help establish a connection if a “RTC Connection” Discord error persists. However, you can only change this particular setting in the Discord desktop application.

  1. To change the server region in the browser or the Discord desktop application, open the application (or visit the Discord website) and log in. Once logged in, select the server name at the top left, then select Server configuration from the menu.
  1. A la Server overview , select the menu Exchange button for the file Server region option to change the server to another Discord server region. However, this is only possible if you are an administrator of this server, with the settings that apply to all connected users.
  1. If you are using the desktop application, you can change the quality of service and the settings of the audio subsystem. To do this, open the application and select cog configuration at the bottom left.
  1. From the menu, select Voice and video, in the list Application settings category. On the left, be sure to select the file Enable high quality service pack priority slider, changing it to file Off position.
  1. In the same menu, scroll down to Audio subsystem section. With the drop-down menu, switch from Standard a Legacy.

Clear the DNS cache

The DNS (domain name server) cache is used to help applications on your PC (such as Discord) resolve domain names (such as to the correct IP addresses. If the DNS cache is corrupted, Discord may attempt to connect to an incorrect address and therefore block voice communication.

To help you solve this, you will need to do so clear the DNS cache on your platform.

  1. Windows users can do this by opening a new PowerShell window. Right-click the Start menu and select Windows PowerShell (administrator) do this. In the PowerShell window, type ipconfig / flushdns and select Enter to be confirmed.
  1. On a Mac, open a new terminal window and type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder do the same, selecting Enter to execute the command.
  1. Once you’ve cleared your cache, try making another voice call to Discord to make sure it works again. You can also use the WebRTC troubleshooting test to confirm that your browser is set up to allow WebRTC calls (such as Discord voice calls).

Solve common problems with discord

While a “RTC connection” error in Discord can be annoying to deal with, the above steps should help resolve it for most users. Other discord issues, such as a blocked login screen during login or robotic voice issues during live chats, can also be fixed by following similar steps, such as changing the server region and QoS settings.

If you have set up your own Discord server and want to get the most out of the service, you may want to consider installing a Discord bot. These robots enhance Discord functionality and give you additional moderation features if you have issues with uncontrolled users or allow you to play your own music to liven things up.
