Does discord overlap not work? 9 ways to fix it

Discord is the most popular chat program among players. Users can create their own servers for their favorite games, for their guild, or simply for a group of friends. Whatever the reason, Discord shows when you’re online, what game you’re playing, and more.

It has voice and text chat servers that allow players to chat while playing their favorite titles. It also includes a game overlay that can be activated by pressing the keyboard shortcut while in the game. Overlay makes it easy to reply to messages, change chat server, and more.

If the Discord overlay doesn’t work, here are several different fixes you can try.

Make sure overlay is enabled

Discord overlay should be enabled by default, but sometimes users disable it or the error causes the overlay to turn off. The first step is to make sure the overlay is turned on.

Click on User Configuration Discord icon. It’s to the right of your username, next to the microphone and headset icons. When it opens, scroll down and click Overlay and secure the Enable game overlay the slider is on.

If enabled, the slider will be green with a check mark. If not, it will be gray with an “X”.

Make sure specific games are enabled

The first step is to enable the overlay of all Discord. If this does not resolve your issue, make sure the specific game you want to play has the overlay turned on. Go to User Settings> Game Activity and look at the list.

Any game that has the overlay turned on will display a gray monitor next to it. You can also hover your cursor over a game and it will be displayed Overlay: enabled or Overlay: Off. The monitor will also have a red “X”. You can click on the monitor to quickly activate the overlay of this specific title.

Run Discord as an administrator

Many potential failures, such as Discord overlay, that do not work can be avoided by opening and running a program as an administrator. This tells your system that you can trust the program and that it is free of malware and viruses.

Right-click Discord and choose Run as administrator. This will open the program normally, but will give you full administrative privileges and evade firewalls or security programs that block it.

Check the display scale

You can customize the screen scale from your Windows settings. Although this can make text and icons easier to detect, can also hide the Discord overlay. Sometimes it only takes a 5% difference to hide the screen. The good news is that you can change the scale with just a few clicks.

Open Settings> Display and look for the Scale and layout subtitle. Look for the “Resize text, apps, and other items” option and click the drop-down box. Set it back to 100%. Give the system a moment to re-scale before trying Discord again.

It completely completes the discord

A common mistake among Discord users is that part of the application may remain running in the background, even after closing the rest. If this is the case, Discord may not open when you try to start it, let alone run the overlay.

Open the task manager and end all Discord-related processes. You will probably see several processes called Discord (32 bits) or Discord (64 bits) depending on your operating system. End these processes and restart Discord.

Restart the computer

It’s such a simple step, but one that is often overlooked. Restarting your PC can solve most problems with almost any program. If the full Discord shutdown does not work, restart your computer before taking any further steps.

Make sure there are no other active overlays

Discord is not the only program that uses an overlay. Streaming software like OBS and tools like the Xbox Game Bar generate overlays for use in the game, and sometimes these programs can interfere with Discord overlay. Turn off any third-party software that may interfere with Discord.

Once done, restart Discord, then try the Discord overlay again to confirm if it works.

Disable hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration is a feature of many applications that uses CPU and GPU resources to ensure that the program runs more smoothly. This is particularly useful on weaker systems that may use a little extra help. However, hardware acceleration can sometimes interfere with Discord overlay.

To turn off hardware acceleration, open Discord and go to Settings> Appearance and scroll down to Hardware acceleration. Make sure the switching next to the option is turned off. Not only can this fix issues with the overlay, but it can also help games run more smoothly while Discord plays in the background.

Reinstall Discord

If everything else fails and the Discord overlay still doesn’t work, you can uninstall and reinstall Discord. There is little risk in this step. Information related to your account, servers, and more is stored on the server side, so even if you clear your computer, you can regain access to that information if you sign in again.

Open Control panel > Uninstall a program and scroll until you find Discord in the list. Click on Discordand then right-click and choose Uninstall. After you have completely removed Discord from your machine, you can reinstall the program by going to Discord website.

Download the latest version of Discord from the site. Don’t rely on a previous download if you still have one. After reinstalling Discord and logging back in, try overlaying.
