4 Simple and Easy Ways to Protect Windows 10

Windows 10 represents three decades of development and, as an operating system, is already quite polished. This does not mean, however, that when you download a new copy of this operating system, it is perfect in every way.

Windows 10 still needs some modifications to offer a really good level of security. Plus, Windows 10 is already there too a cloud service, which means that Microsoft now also wants to collect and sell your information.

Unless you do something about it, it will send a lot of private information to Redmond. Depending on your personal level of comfort, it can be a major security and privacy issue. Which brings us to our first tip.

Use a Windows 10 privacy tool

Microsoft has not made it easy to disable some of its information gathering features. There’s a lot to play with in privacy settings, but most users don’t even know all the ways Windows 10 can spy on users or what happens to that information.

The good news is that there is now a whole list of specialized tools that only exist to help you adjust your privacy settings to the most used operating system in the world. Most are free and also allow you to modify things that Microsoft may not want you to stick with.

A great example is the delicious name O&O ShutUp 10, which is considered an “antispy” tool for Windows 10. Whether you consider that each switch offers a problem or not, it’s certainly a convenient way to monitor the Windows 10 experience.

Windows Defender Pit

The included antivirus package for Windows 10 is a welcome feature that prevents millions of users who would know nothing better from getting infected with all sorts of nasty things. However, if you want to play a more active role in your safety i you would like to capture a wider variety of malware, and your best option is a third-party program.

There are free and paid options. Some fix everything and others only detect specific types of malware. If you’re happy with Windows Defender, but just want to add it, it’s a good option like Malwarebytes.

Encrypt the hard drive

Hard disk encryption is one of the best security enhancements you can make on a Windows 10 PC. It means that if someone gets to your hard drive, they won’t have any way to see the data, as it’s heavily encrypted.

In some cases, your hard drive will be automatically encrypted after you install Windows 10, but if not, you can turn it on manually BitLocker, Microsoft’s native encryption solution. It’s pretty powerful, but you need a motherboard with one TPM module for it to work. If your computer does not have one, you will need to use a USB drive to house the decryption key.

If that doesn’t sound great to you, then there will be a third-party solution like this VeraCrypt it will also do the job very well. Once encrypted, you will sleep much better at night.

Click UAC at the most

Windows UAC o User account control is an operating system feature that alerts you every time a change is made to your computer. For example, when you try to install a new program, UAC will dim the screen and ask you to do the installation before running the software.

By default, UAC only errors you when you do something important or when an installed application wants to make a significant change to your PC. However, there is a higher security level above the default, which will alert you to a wide range of changes. This means that it will catch hackers and malicious web programs that try to hack your machine.

For most people, the default setting is correct, but if you’re adventurous, visit all sorts of weird websites, and download software to try it just for fun, it’s a quick way to protect yourself. All you have to do to access the UAC settings is press the Windows key and search for “UAC”.
